Campaign Update
Great Expectations, The Campaign
for Maryland is currently at $342 million and growing!
Scholarships Campaign Achieves $100 Million Milestone
We are excited to share the good
news that generous donors have committed more than $100 million toward
a goal of $350 million in private support for scholarships, fellowships
and other student support. This great milestone is a result of the
commitment and dedication of our alumni and friends lead by our scholarship
campaign co-chairs. Maryland men's basketball coach Gary Williams
'68, journalist Connie Chung '69 and technology entrepreneur Buno
Pati '86, M.S. '88, Ph.D. '92 continue to be excellent spokespersons
and leaders, setting an example with their own commitments to the
campaign.
Major Gifts, Major Impacts
Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center Awarded Largest Grant in its History
The resounding
applause at the Clarice
Smith Performing Arts Center celebrates a
grand achievement. The Doris
Duke Charitable Foundation awarded the
center a $1.125 million grant, recognizing its exceptional ability
to merge outstanding performing arts with academic life and community
outreach. The foundation's Leading College and University Presenters
Program (LCUPP) identified the Clarice Smith Center as one of only seven
university-based organizations across the country that it would invite
to submit proposals for its grants. One of three finalists ultimately
selected, this award represents the single largest foundation grant
to the center since it opened in 2001.
Terps Gather for Celebrations in South Florida
South Florida was a
hot spot in late February. More than 100 alumni showed their
terrapin spirit at the 9th Annual South Florida Alumni Club
Crab Feast in Ft. Lauderdale. At the Boca Raton Resort and
Club, an intimate gathering of alumni and friends helped
celebrate Jack Kay '47 and his recent gift of $1.5 million to establish the Abraham S. and Jack Kay Chair in Israel Studies at the university. Great Expectations campaign leaders reminiscenced about their student days at Maryland as they joined local Florida alumni in toasting Kay's
support of this growing area of study.

Helping Students Reach for the Stars
Retired Kinesiology Professor Gives Back to Students
"At retirement, my colleagues knew me better than to award me a gold watch or a rocking chair. They knew students were more important to me," says Sally J. Phillips, retired associate chair of the Department of Kinesiology in the School
of Health and Human Performance. Instead, her colleagues helped Phillips establish a graduate award. But after 27 years of teaching at Maryland, Phillips wanted to do more for the next generation of students. She sought a way to create an endowed graduate fellowship for students completing their doctorates in the college, and with the help of Maryland's
planned giving director, she found it.
France-Merrick Foundation Strengthens Ties Between Baltimore and College Park
"Education is the number one funding priority" at the France-Merrick Foundation, says Robert Pinkard, foundation vice president. Deepening its earlier commitment to the University
of Maryland Incentive Awards Program (UMIAP), the foundation recently presented the university with a generous gift of $200,000 towards the program's endowment, providing scholarship awards for Baltimore students to attend Maryland. By creating educational opportunities and supporting achievement, the foundation is playing a pivotal role in helping Baltimore's students attend the state's
flagship school. During a luncheon hosted by President C.D. Mote
Jr., UMIAP award recipients shared their academic and personal challenges
and triumphs with foundation representatives. Click here

Alumnus Rallies for the Terps Through Gift
Daniel Crawford '74 is a die-hard Terps fan.
Despite living in (University of Pittsburgh) Panthers country, he is
devoted to Terps basketball and football. "I get a lot of kidding at
my country club because I'm always telling my friends how good Maryland
basketball is," he says. But recently, Crawford thought to himself, "I
have not given anything [to Maryland] and I think it's high time I
started." That's when he and his wife, Ruth Ann Crawford, made a gift
of $100,000 to the athletic department's Building Partners II campaign.
Find A Niche for Giving
Giving Is Good Business
Hyunil Shin's story of giving began in childhood. Both his parents died when he was very young, and consequently, he dropped out of high school to work and support his family. Shin says, "I promised myself, if I made money when I was older, I would support people who needed help." Six years ago when his older brother retired and asked Shin to run the family's auto body business, it was a turning point in his life. Shin wanted to share his profits in a way that would benefit many. So he started with small contributions to the University of Maryland's Korean Language Scholarship Fund. Over time, his gifts increased, and last year, Shin gave the scholarship fund and the Korean Heritage Fund nearly $10,000.

In the electronic age, e-books are becoming a
must. Students made three times more virtual visits to the University
Libraries last year than they made physical trips, tapping a range of
digital resourcesfrom full text journals and books, to streamed
video and audio, to digital images. You can help the Libraries keep that
competitive edge with a gift of only $1,000 to add 10 academic e-books
to their collections.
