Communication Beyond the BlackBerry on the Horizon
Many of us can’t imagine life without our cell phone or BlackBerry keeping us connected to the world, but for Anthony Ephremides, the Cynthia Kim Eminent Professor of Information Technology, that’s just the beginning of flexible connectedness. Building First-Class Learning Environments
Business School Welcomes Completion of North Wing
The Robert H. Smith School of Business has room to breathe with the recent completion of the Van Munching Hall North Wing. With the generous support of alumni and friends, the $20 million addition opened more than 38,000 square feet of new space for growing Smith School programs this winter. The facility features additional flexible space for undergraduate classes, conference rooms and team rooms to facilitate the processes of teamwork, more and better quality space for faculty and doctoral students, and an elegant executive meeting room. Many spaces in the building have been named in recognition of the generous donors who supported its construction.

Art Professor’s Legacy Comes Full Circle
“Teaching keeps you young, and it keeps you questioning—that’s the best part,” Herman Maril told an interviewer for the National Archives of American Art. For six decades, the painter engaged in what he loved most, creating art; half of his career was dedicated to teaching art at Maryland. The Baltimore native, who died in 1986, is widely recognized as a quintessential American artist of the 20th century. A gift from the Maril family is capping his legacy as one of the finest educators in his field. They are donating $50,000 toward the renovation of the student art gallery, now named the Herman Maril Gallery, and a few of Maril’s paintings are being donated to the university’s permanent collection.

Alumna is Passionate about Writing and Language Students’ Futures
One might say Marilyn Courtot ’65 has been a lover of literature and the arts from her earliest childhood, whether she was reading Asimov’s science fiction classics or getting her first taste of opera in elementary school. The creator of two very successful children’s literature companies, remembers how language and literature opened the door to another world. To help others discover their muse early in life, she is creating a legacy gift of $100,000 to fund the Courtot Living-Learning Scholarship in the Arts and Humanities for students in the Jiménez-Porter Writer’s House and Language House.
